The KSN Collection

The images reflect Penang and George Town pre the Rent Control Act Repeal, 2000 when rents were cheap and every space occupied by a multicultural tapestry of industrious peoples; before the UNESCO World Heritage Listing in 2008 and the onslaught of tourism coupled with the socio economic and cultural changes taking place Malaysia. They reveal a city and state, at a cross roads, just as the port moved off the island to the mainland, all but taking with it its raison d’etre, that of transhipment port with all the associated services, industries and businesses that supported it and visa versa. The first multi storey high rise had been built and change was imminent. They capture the place and the state that enraptured the UNESCO observers who recognised its significance and value.
